You may or may not know that I plan on home educating my twins. It’s something we decided when the boys were just a couple of months old and, whilst they’re only three years and 11 months old at the time of writing this, I have been using fun educational resources since the boys were two, thanks to Twinkl.
I found out about Twinkl through the home education grapevine, and swiftly went to find out what it was. I loved the look of it, but it seemed like I probably wouldn’t really need it at that stage, with the boys being just two years old. However after looking into it further, I realised that there was plenty of things on there that I could make use of, and some of it was FREE!
Disclaimer: Twinkl gave me a free subscription in return for an honest review. I’ve been a fully paid up subscriber for over a year anyway, so all views and opinions are completely my own.
What is Twinkl?
Twinkl changes lives by providing instant access to a complete range of teacher created, engaging and inspiring teaching, planning and assessment materials. Truly, I don’t think there is a single topic, subject, or activity that is NOT available on Twinkl. They cover everything you can think of!
At two years old the focus is on playing and having fun, so of course I never gave them any ‘work’ to do. However, Twinkl allowed me to have access to countless colouring pages which we made full use of, and also seasonal provisions such as Christmas and Easter cards to print and colour.
Another thing we used it for, was to decorate their bedroom. We live in a rented house, and aren’t able to decorate as we’d like to. However, after seeing what was available on Twinkl, my imagination kicked in and after Lewi and Ollie chose their theme, jungle animals, I soon had an assortment of jungle animal pictures around their bedroom. I was also able to print out the letters of their names in a jungle theme pattern.
Not my best effort I admit, but not only did they love to look at the cute colourful pictures, it also helped them to learn all the animal names. Since then their bedroom has changed to dinosaurs (no photo’s of that unfortunately), and soon it’s changing to superhero theme (keep an eye out on social media where I’ll share photo’s), all thanks to my Twinkl subscription.
Along with some cheap colourful bunting I got from a local supermarket, which goes with most things, it’s so easy to update their bedroom to pretty much any theme they like, whenever they like!
Learning With Twinkl
It’s not all about the cute pictures and cards I can get from Twinkl, of course it’s main purpose it an educational one. So how have I used my Twinkl subscription educationally, for Lewi and Ollie at such a young age?
A few of the first resources I used were The Gruffalo pencil control activities and colouring sheets, multiple ‘Can You Find’ posters, and colour display photos, which I used for the boys to find items around the house that were the same colours as in the photos.
With the colour matching game, I also used to play a really fast song on YouTube to get them speeding around while looking for items, using up some energy!
The boys also learned to use scissors with Twinkl scissor skills resources.
We decorate our board with Twinkl resources too.
Our Most Recent Twinkl Activities
We’ve done quite a few cool Halloween things on the Twinkl website this week. Including learning about Halloween and its origins on a slideshow, a Halloween Eye Spy PDF, and a What Can I See slideshow.
The What Can I See in particular was really cool, because it was a black screen apart from a pair of binocular circles, and the boys would press the keyboard arrow button and the binoculars moved around the screen giving you a glimpse of what they were looking at, and the boys had to guess. They really enjoyed that.
One of my favourite things at the moment, are the Twinkl Originals stories. They’re currently on the website as e-Books, and they’ve also recently started rolling them out as physical books posted to your home when you subscribe to the book club.
The e-Books Are Gorgeous!
I love the artwork, and the stories are brilliant. You don’t even realise you’re learning as you read them (yes, I learn something too!).
The first one we read was Little Acorns. Disguised as a cute story about an acorn, you learn the life cycle of an acorn to a mighty oak tree. We loved it, and it made acorn collecting in the park the next day all the more interesting as the boys knew what happens to them.
I will give you a tip though – don’t leave acorns in the oven for longer than necessary!
We also really enjoyed Sparks in The Sky (about Bonfire night), and Back to Earth With a Bump (where you learn about the sun and moon). I’m looking forward to getting Ronald The Rhino book in the post really soon!
The great thing about Twinkl Originals books is that each book comes with loads of accompanying activities to do.
You really are never ever EVER short of things to read, look at, interact with, make, and do with a Twinkl subscription!
Who is Twinkl Suitable For?
Twinkl is suitable for parents, teachers, childminders and home educators, of children from birth to two (yes, really!), to EYFS, and KS1/2/3/4 stages, to secondary education. It also has resources for SEND and EAL. And if that wasn’t enough, it also has resources for adult education (elderly care).
As I am based in Wales, I also have access to countless Welsh resources, which, just like the English versions, are all curriculum based. I believe Twinkl is available in many countries around the world.
So How Will I Use Twinkl, as a Home Educator?
The great thing about Twinkl, is that it covers the whole curriculum – if that’s how I chose to educate my twins. But you’re not tied to that, there’s no set order you have to follow. You can pick up and put down whatever you choose!
The main benefit for me, is that I have a go-to place for guidance. Or, if I come up with a topic, or the boys choose a topic, I know I can go to the Twinkl website and almost guarantee they’ll have it covered in some way.
Also, the boys get really excited when they see me on the Twinkl website, and race upstairs to the printer to await their new activity!
Twinkl is an amazing resource. It’s made my life so easy, so soon! I have many many years left to continue enjoying it, and I intend to make the most of my ongoing subscription. It’s also brilliant that the team at Twinkl are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They are really quick to respond to any email queries, plus they have loads of Facebook support groups for whichever category of educator you fall into.
I really hope this review helped give you more of an idea about Twinkl and how you can utilise it in your family or childcare setting.
If you have any questions for me, then let me know in the comments. Otherwise, why not head on over to Twinkl.co.uk and find out more for yourself about how great Twinkl is!
